Dutch wage and income tax is calculated on the basis of four progressive tax brackets. The tax withheld each month from your salary is calculated on the basis of your annual salary. If you worked for half a year in the Netherlands, you are entitled to a substantial tax refund.

If you live in the Netherlands, you must state your complete worldwide income in your tax return. Your income from abroad is also part of your worldwide income (for example income from employment or foreign property).

Opting for resident taxpayer status

Do you live abroad but do you have income in or from the Netherlands? Or do you have possessions in the Netherlands? Or did you not live in the Netherlands for the whole year? In that case, you can opt to be treated as if you have a resident taxpayer status for the whole year.

Double tax relief

The fact that you have to state your income from abroad does not always mean that you have to pay income tax on this in the Netherlands. If the right to levy taxes according under national and international regulations is assigned to another country than the Netherlands, you do not owe any income tax on that income in the Netherlands. In order to avoid your having to pay income tax in several countries, you are entitled to an income tax relief in the Netherlands.

If you are a non-resident taxpayer , you are required to file a tax return in the Netherlands if: you have received an invitation to file a return. you have not received an invitation to file a tax return, but you earned income in or from the Netherlands over which you owe more than € 45.

If you have income from different countries, tax is levied on that income by multiple countries. If you have capital in another country than that in which you reside, you will also be confronted with this issue. If tax is levied on the same income or capital by more than 1 country, this is called double taxation.

To avoid that you pay tax on your income or your capital more than once, the Netherlands has concluded tax treaties with a considerable number of countries. A tax treaty is an agreement between 2 countries about which of them has the right to levy tax on certain income. The contents of the treaties are not the same for every country. If the Netherlands has not concluded a tax treaty with the country concerned, the ‘Double Taxation (Avoidance) Decree (2001)’ applies. Application of this Decree will also result in the avoidance of double taxation.

The Netherlands has concluded tax treaties for non-residents with the (click:) tax treaties for non-residents Netherlands

In general, however, all foreigners who live and work in the Netherlands are required to pay into the Dutch social security system and in return can claim various government benefits, including family benefits, maternity and paternity leave, unemployment benefits, long-term care, sick leave and disability benefits

In 2019 the amount per child per quarter is: 221,49 euros for children aged 0 to 5 years. 268,95 euros for children aged 6 to 11 years. 316,41 euros per quarter for children from 12 to 17 years. Check this website for more information.
